Jobs campaigneers to hold public meeting in Cumbernauld

WITH the Chancellor of the Exchequer still refusing to rule out compulsory redundancies for local tax workers, campaigners are gearing up to hold a conference this week in Cumbernauld.

Tensions are running high at the HMRC tax offices in Cumbernauld. Many staff fear the effects of Westminster cutbacks on their jobs, and the PCS trade union recently called out its members on a series of walkouts to protest against new rules on absence.

Local MP Gregg McClymont once again sought reassurance from the Exchequer on the Government’s plans regarding HMRC jobs.

Treasury secretary David Gauke confirmed that while a reduction of around 2600 posts is planned, ”HMRC will do everything it can to avoid compulsory redundancies and these will only be used as a very last resort.”

Local pressure group Cumbernauld and Kilsyth Defend Public Sector Jobs and Services Campaign has organised a public conference in the New Town Hall on Friday (June 24).

This will run from 11.30am until 1.30pm. Gregg McClymont has confirmed his attendance and the speakers include Derek Thomson of the PCS trade union and Eric Chester from Cumbernauld and Kilsyth Unemployed Workers Centre.
