Join the Autumn beach clean!

Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) want locals to join them at 150 clean ups taking place at various beaches between November 2 and 8.

SAS is an environmental charity which protects the UK’s oceans, waves and beaches for all to enjoy safely and sustainably, via community action, campaigning, volunteering, conservation, education and scientific research.

Beaches included in the scheme are: Aberdeen on November 6 from 9a.m. to 12p.m; West Sands, St Andrews on November 7 from 10a.m. to 1p.m., Montrose on November 7 from 10a.m to 1p.m and East Sands, St Andrews on November 8 between 10a.m. and 1p.m.

All the autumn beach cleans are being led by a local lead volunteer and SAS are calling on coastal communities to show helpers their support by heading down to their nearest beach to remove over 15 tonnes of trash from the tidelines and recycle over 10,000 plastic bottles and cans.

Once again Scotland is well represented, with a record breaking 17 Autumn Beach Cleans taking place from Belhaven Bay to Ullapool.

A spokesman said: “Each autumn UK beach lovers brace themselves for the inevitable mass accumulation of marine litter (the majority of which is plastic).

“The combined effects of eight million items of litter entering our oceans each day, the ever strengthening North Atlantic hurricane season and the end of seasonal beach clean operations lead to a ‘Perfect Storm’ of marine litter at our beaches, causing great upset to people for whom the beach is a vital community space, to be enjoyed and protected 365 days a year.”

There is no need to register for the clean up, all you need to do is dress up warm and head down to the beach.
