Key role for Cumbernauld in Olympics Torch route

CUMBERNAULD will blaze a trail for the arrival of the Olympic Torch - and will provide a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for locals to see the ultimate symbol of one of the world’s biggest sporting events

After months of hush-hush discussions with competition bosses, it has emerged that the Olympic Flame will be conveyed through North Carbrain Road on June 13 – in what will be the ONLY stopping-off point in North Lanarkshire.

Live music and an athletics competition will form part of the celebrations for this iconic relay which is scheduled to get under way at 11.41 am.

Crowds will be met with the imposing sight of inspirational white and gold-clad torchbearers conveying the Flame on an eastward journey to Edinburgh. All were picked through a nomination process – and hail from outwith the town.

Provost Tom Curley said: “This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the people of North Lanarkshire to be a part of the Olympics.”
