Kilsyth and District Probus Club

The speaker at last week’s Probus meeting was local man John Brown with his talk on ‘Around Munster’.

John worked for over ten years as a senior lecturer in orthodontic technology at the University of Cork and his talk was based on his travels and experiences around the south west of Ireland during that period.

With the help of photographic images and video clips, he demonstrated the part music and laughter play in the life of Irish people.

From the picturesque towns of Cobh and Clonakilty with their floral displays and music festivals to ceilidhs and pub entertainment in small coastal villages – all encapsulated the culture and fun of the Irish.

Application to religious devotion at Croagh Patrick, Westport with the lengthy pilgrimage over stony ground to the top of this mountain, often on bare feet, was balanced with the fun of a Silly Sports Day with athletes running backwards and hurdlers running under the hurdles. This diverse mixture of faith and fun epitomises what it means to be Irish.

The next meeting of Probus on March 19 will be the club’s annual general meeting.
