Kilsyth Civic Week gets under way with ‘biggest turnout yet’

The day started with the town bathed in sunshine as the parade prepared to depart Kilsyth Academy.

A good old Scottish summer drizzle soon started, but thankfully the torrential downpours which fell elsewhere on the day stayed away.

Once the parade reached Burngreen, the Lord Chamberlain got proceedings underway with his address: “Councillors, honorary guests, citizens of Kilsyth; I bid you welcome on this historic day to witness and rejoice in the coronation of our Civic Week Queen for the year 2011.”

This year’s Civic Queen Laura-Ann Scott was then crowned by retiring Queen, Ellyss Conroy, to the cheers of the near 2000 strong crowd.

Entertainment was provided by Kilsyth Thistle Pipe Band, The Starlets cheerleaders, Twa Kwan Do and Zumba dancers.

The park was also jam packed with stalls for various organisations, and two fire engines, which kept the youngsters amused.

Committee member Jean Jones said: “It was on par with the busiest it’s ever been I think.

“We were expecting it to be quieter because of the rain but then when we turned the corner into the park it was full of people.

“Even the police were saying, ‘Where have all of these people come from?’

“I would like to thank all of the volunteers who turned out on the day and MTL Transport for helping with the arrangements.

“It turned out a great day - it’s all about bringing the community together and the weather didn’t stop anyone enjoying themselves!”

Meanwhile, Sunday saw the under-12’s football tournament take place at the St Patrick’s Sportsfield.

After a very evenly contested competition, the youngsters of Holy Cross Primary emerged as worthy winners.
