Kilsyth Thistle Pipe Band drummers celebrate Cowal win

THE drummers of Kilsyth Thistle Pipe Band signed off the season in style with a victory in their category at the Cowal Highland Gathering in Dunoon.

The percussionists, who won the Champion of Champions title in 2010, have continued to improve, but were unable to hold on to the much-coveted title.

Secretary Stevie Kinvig said: “Drum Sergeant George Wall is in charge and under his tutoring and leadership the section has gone from strength to strength.

“It was good for them to finish the piping season with a win at Cowal and we’ll focus on doing a bit of fundraising during the winter.”

The pipers’ section unfortunately didn’t make the grade in Dunoon however, Stevie says they have taken a step forward.

“This year we’ve definitely improved,” he added. “We’re up in the first half of each finish and we’re on the look out for any pipers who want to join us and help us to improve.

“Usually we would start practicing for competition before Christmas but Pipe Major Alastair Tripney didn’t join us until after Christmas last year.

“So he started a bit on the back foot and only had a couple of months but he’s done a great job.

“Next year hopefully we’ll be looking to get into the prize positions quite often.”

Any pipers who are interested in joining the band can head along to the hall known as the old telephone exchange on Deacons Road any Monday or Thursday between 7pm and 9pm.
