The landlord which is now responsible for business properties in Forth Walk has reinforced its get-tough stance with Cumbernauld’s post office. Last year we reported how agent Belgate Properties said it would continue to charge the business rent for well over a decade even if it moved elsewhere, as it plans to. Last week, the firm’s Stephen Hill told the News and Chronicle: ‘The Post Office will remain liable for all obligations at their existing premises until the end of 2029 and we would hope that support and representations for them to remain in their current location are successful.’’ A consultation which could see the existing facility converted into a sub post office downstairs in the mall closed on Saturday, January 19.

Meanwhile, the News and Chronicle has learned that the post office within Cumbernauld Village Pharmacy will open sooner than originally thought.

The vital service has been out of commission for several weeks after a criminal gang blew up an ATM machine on the exterior wall of the historic Main Street building.
A Post Office spokesperson said: “We apologise to customers for the lack of access to post office services following the ATM robbery at The Village Post Office, which destroyed the counter and fixtures. The main repairs are complete and there are just a few technical issues to resolve so we hope to announce the date of re-opening shortly.’’ Police enquiries into the incident which saw the removal of a five figure sum from the machine are continuing and no arrests have been made as yet.
The incident hit national headlines after a loud explosion was heard and witnesses reported a group of men making off from the area in two vehicles on Wednesday, December 10.
