Last chance appeal for petitions in Kilsyth bus cuts row

Opponents of bus cuts are being asked to sign and return petitions this week before the firm responsible takes the final steps to halt services.

First Bus East controversially intend to cancel the X86 and 24 services in a move that will sever links to Stirling and Falkirk by mid- August.

The company says that the routes have been running at a loss for some time but the cuts have sparked cross-party fury in Kilsyth, Queenzieburn and Banton.

The latter will have services cut off entirely.

Councillor Heather McVey has urged clubs, churches and clubs to hand back petitions by Friday.

She said: “We’re keen to have these to tell First the scale of people opposed to this before they submit the papers to the traffic commissioner on Friday.

“This will formally cut the routes.

“The petitions, however, are only the start of our campaign as we will be working with the Unite union and as many people as possible.”

Councillor Jean Jones added: “We are working hard to reverse their decision.’’
