Lesley secures a top post at Caledonian

A CUMBERNAULD woman has secured a top post at one of Scotland’s universities - after leading Scotland’s main development agency for the last five years.

Professor Lesley Sawers who is the chief excecutive of the Scottish Council for Development and Industry will now take up the role of vice principal for business development at Glasgow Caledonian University.

A former pupil of St Mary’s Primary School and Our Lady’s High School, Professor Sawers (54) is an economist by trade.

Professor Sawers said that she was ‘‘thrilled’’ by her new role.

She said: “I’m looking forward to adding my effort and energies to support the university to deliver against its global ambitions while ensuring it continues to provide access to education and opportunity for all. “And I look forward to joining “Team Caledonian” to identify and secure new global opportunities for the benefit of the University, Glasgow and Scotland,’’ she added.

Prior to joining the SCDI, Professor Sawers was the first female chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce in its 230 year history. Married to Glaswegian Alan McKechnie, Professor Sawers regularly makes visits back to Greenfaulds to see proud parents May and John.
