Not the result that Rangers fans might have hoped for against their arch-rivals, Rob Roy, but the scoreline does not tell the whole story, it was much closer than the margin suggests and for much of the game the two teams were pretty well matched.

The Rabs had assembled a completely new squad since last season including some highly rated (and highly paid) experienced juniors, while Rangers had pretty much last year’s team with a couple of additions from amatuer ranks.

It was a sensational start from Rob Roy; they surged forward right form the kick-off and almost scored twice within the first minute.They continued to press forward but were well contained by the Rangers’ defence with Hogg and Doyle doing great work.

By the quarter hour mark though the game had become a much more even contest with Rangers much more in the picture and Dolan twice went in on McPherson and was rather unlucky not to get something more.

Then just after the half hour Sawyer ran in, evaded a couple of challenges and struck a fine shot from about ten yards to give Rob Roy the lead.

It was short lived though, five minutes later a foul by Carter saw Rangers awarded a penalty and McLaren sent it high to the roof of the net to level the score. Within five minutes of the restart Rob Roy had made a double substitution as their manager was clearly unhappy with their performance but almost immediately they did go ahead when a nice piece of interplay between Sawyer and Deas saw the latter score their second.

Again it was a shortlived lead as a scramble in their goalmouth had Rangers draw level. Midway through the half and the ever dangerous Sawyer added a third goal, and Barr a fourth. They added a fifth when Martin scored an easy goal very late on, but by that time it was all over in any case.

A great night’s football on a perfect pitch on a a fine summer’s evening; what more could the fans want, only a victory perhaps?
