Gala thanks

Sir, – As reported in the paper a couple of weeks ago, Carbrain had an enjoyable and successful Gala Day this year.

The Community and people of Carbrain at times and be much maligned, and recently we have had to endure much, but it is days like this that show we can put these issues aside and come to together as a community. Like all fun days you need rides and entertainment to make the day, and XS taekwondo and Joan MacVicar’s School of Dance certainly did entertain. Thank you to both groups for helping to entertain on the day.

These events cannot work without the hard work of volunteers, and we are blessed with many strong community minded people in Carbrain. I would like to thank the committee for again giving the area another great day.

We have always had one or two younger people helping out, this year however we had more from this section of our community which can be vilified by the press. I would like to thank Chris, Robbie, David and Jamie for their work leading up to the day, and their work on the day, John and Christopher for helping with the sumo suits, Emma and Amy for their help with the hair and makeup of the Royal Party. You all showed that our youth are much more than headlines and opinions make them out to be. Well done to you all.

I would also like to thank former Councillor Danny Carrigan for his support of the group and event over the past five years. He always turned up and worked on the day without being requested, and no job was beneath him. He will always be remembered for his skill with a mop. Thanks Danny and we wish you well in your retirement.

As a group we would also like to thank the community who came along on the day. These events would not succeed without you and we look forward to seeing you next year.

In the meantime we have many projects on the go, working with the local schools on environmental projects, planting the train stations and bulb planting in the community. As always these projects can only work with the community taking part. If you would like to help you can contact us via the paper. Planning for the children’s Christmas party is already underway.

We are also re-launching our Pride of Carbrain Awards, celebrating those unsung people in the community who go unrecognised for their work efforts in helping others.

The categories are Citizen/Volunteer of the year, Community involvement (for groups or individuals that are always getting involved in projects), best kept garden, sports person of the year. Nominations are now open; the only rules are that the nominees must live in Carbrain apart from Community Involvement which only needs the person to help out in the area.

Sir, – I am urging the nation to share their professional skills and passions to support local charities, community groups and clubs. It’s vital that we support these groups with our skills in a bid to help them survive during difficult economic times. I know first hand the difference it makes to their lives.
