Local focus on theFirst World War

Organised by arts, library and museums staff from CultureNL, the project forms part of a four year UK-wide commemorative programme that will run all the way through to November 2018.

Under the banner North Lanarkshire’s War - The People’s Story, family memories, photographs and artefacts of all descriptions are being sought.

To stimulate interest in the project, CultureNL has created a range of events for the autumn, including special book groups looking at the writing of the period, a talk on Lanarkshire’s war hospitals, and other events.

CultureNL chair Heather McVey said: “Thanks to a £6,360 award from Museums Galleries Scotland our staff have been able to join in with the UK-wide WW1 commemorative project. “This will help remember those from Lanarkshire who gave their lives for their country, as well as patients in war hospitals and workers in factories and mines.”

“In the longer term, North Lanarkshire will also play a key role in the national Scotland’s War digital archive project.

“In partnership with the University of Edinburgh, this will ensure our stories reach a global audience”.
