Local headteacher bows out in style

A trailblazing and much-loved Cumbernauld head teacher retired last week.

Ann Kay of Whitelees Primary made Scottish teaching history when her school, Whitelees Primary was awarded an a groundbreaking five stars in a report by Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education.

Mrs Kay has found herself inundated with gifts, tributes and farewell hugs from pupils past and present, their grateful parents and staff.

The entire school attended an emotional presentation last week where Mrs Kay spoke candidly and with great affection about her 14 years at the school, referring to the Whitelees Family throughout. She was presented with a book of drawings from her pupils as well as a gigantic plant, jewellery plus a money gift.

Dynamic Mrs Kay (62) who lives in Condorrat with husband James explained how the decision to stand down was something she thought long and hard enough about.

“It was a very difficult one but it was time. I felt that I wanted someone else to come in and move the school on’’ said Mrs Kay who has two sons, Brian (33) and Andrew (30)

“I have loved it. I don’t just love the school but I love the community in Abronhill and I think Cumbernauld is an amazing place.

“I’m at the point now though that I want to spend time with my own family,’’ said Mrs Kay who also has a little grandchild.

“ I’d like to say a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who has made my time here so special. It really has has been a wonderful experience,’’ said Mrs Kay.

‘’I would also like to say to the pupils ‘’keep reaching for the stars!’’ she added.
