Major scheme to tackle plight of young jobless

AMBITIOUS recession- busting plans to dramatically cut levels of youth unemployment are awaiting the rubber stamp at North Lanarkshire Council today (Wednesday)

The number of opportunities for young people across North Lanarkshire are to be boosted by a three-year £1.7 million project which aims to get 5000 potential employees back to work.

And the initiative – hailed as “a glimmer of hope” for young people – will have a particular focus on out-of-work school leavers.

Councillor Jim McCabe, leader of North Lanarkshire Council, stressed that the moves are already being laid down to tackle this issue – and hinted that jobs in construction will feature heavily in the initiative.

He said: “It is great when kids are academic and want to work in computers – but of course you need buildings to put these computers in.

“We would be happy to work with companies who are already contractors for the council for example.”
