Mary, who stays in Condorrat’s Rannoch Drive, has been volunteering for the lunch club at the Macauley Centre for an impressive 23 years.
This is all the more remarkable as she just turned 90.
Macauley Centre caretaker Wilma McLean said: “Mary has been coming here for 23 years to help out at our pensioners’ lunch club which we hold twice a week.
“It gets her out the house and she really enjoys it. We say she is Cumbernauld’s oldest charlady.
“When she started the volunteers would cook the meals on the premises but these days they are delivered hot from the school kitchens.
“We couldn’t let the occasion of her 90th birthday go unnoticed so we held a party in her honour. We had a birthday cake and Jennifer Logan of North Lanarkshire Council brought in an entertainer so it was a big surprise for her.”
Wilma also asked the News and Chronicle to send a photographer to the big event and we were happy to oblige.
The lunch club meets every Monday and Wednesday.
Do you know a volunteer who deserves a little bit of recognition in this newspaper? We are always looking to give a shout out to those who give up their free time to benefit others.
