Medieval project inspires primary school pupils

VERILY there was merriment when a Cumbernauld School went back, way back – to Medieval times!

The stirring topic of Knights and Castles has been undergoing some serious study at Baird Memorial primary school.

For Primary 5s have been visiting Motherwell Heritage Centre, building their own fortresses and getting acquainted with Robert the Bruce and the Battle of Bannockburn

The youngsters even had to do what we do here daily – write a newspaper article. In their case however, the topic was about the landmark battle in 1314!

They also learned about the layout of a castle, the workings of the feudal system and the day-to-day lives of the top tiers of society – and those who served them.

And to celebrate their hard work and all they had, pupils learned they staged a banquet in class, where everyone had their own part to play - not simply in terms of dressing up but preparing the feast itself.

Teacher Maria McMullan said: “We made some traditional medieval food like oatcakes, bread, porridge and soup. The jesters put on a show for us and we all enjoyed our day.’’
