Meeting to discuss fuel poverty

The Scottish Socialist Party is hosting the meeting and anyone interested in this issue is welcome.

Local member Kevin McVey, said: “There seems to be no end to the greed of the big energy companies who have an insatiable drive to maximise their profits regardless of the impact on millions of people across the country. As we enter the mid-winter it is obscene that people will be facing a choice of heating their home or feeding their kids. It should be unthinkable in the 21st century, yet energy companies on an annual basis are allowed to get away with it. Something has to change and that is why we are campaigning against the price rises but also for the energy industry to be brought back into public ownership.”

The meeting will be addressed by SSP co-spokesman Colin Fox, who has authored a party pamphlet on the campaign against fuel poverty.

Mr McVey, added: “The party has produced the pamphlet to outline our case for eradicating fuel poverty. It is not enough to stand back and allow fuel companies to profiteer at our expense.

“Neither is it enough to call for more competition in the energy market when it is privatisation that has created these problems. What is needed is the political will to stand up to these massive multinational corporations and the meeting will discuss how to build a movement that can do just that.”

The meeting will be held in The Link Community Centre at 7.30pm.
