Mobile mast appeal upheld

DESPITE widespread local opposition, the Scottish Government has given the go-ahead for a phone mast to be built near Eastfield Primary School and Nursery.

Telecomms firms O2 and Vodafone twice submitted a joint application to erect the mast at the site, but these were unanimously rejected by North Lanarkshire Council amid a flurry of protests from locals.

However, last week the Scottish Government upheld the appeal, overruling NLC.

A spokesman for Vodafone said: “We had previously applied for a site at this location but this was refused by the local planning committee, despite a recommendation for approval by the local planning officer.

“We amended the design and resubmitted an application but this was also refused. A further review failed to indentify any viable alternatives and we decided to appeal the refusal to the Scottish Government. We are pleased that the Reporter has allowed the appeal.”

Now the plan is to build the mast early next year. Those fighting the plans say the key issue now is whether the council, which owns the land in question, is under any obligation to hand it over.
