Motorists warned to expect delays

TRAFFIC queues and chaos are expected to hit motorists when a busy slip road closes in August for four months.

Commuters travelling to Stirling or Glasgow on the A80 will be affected by the closure of the A8011 northbound slip road at Roadside, Cumbernauld.

The disruption will last from Sunday, August 1, until Tuesday, November 30, as part of construction work for the M80 upgrade. However, Alex Ramsay, assistant business manager (Roads Operations) North said the length of the closure may be reduced.

He said: "As part of the M80 upgrading works that HMC are undertaking on behalf of Transport Scotland, we have been asked to close the slip road from Roadside for four months. The order to close the road is being progressed.

"However, I am in discussions with HMC to alter their method of operation to reduce the duration of these works."

Residents in Cumbernauld Village have raised concerns about various aspects of the onging work and feel there should have been more consultation about the forthcoming slip road closure.

A member of Cumbernauld Village Action Committee said: "It's going to have really serious consequences for traffic management. It is a real concern, particularly for people in Cumbernauld Village and will also lead to congestion getting on to the A80."

Oliver Allan, secretary of Cumbernauld Village Community Council said: "I can see that the closure will cause a lot of disruption to the village. Personally I don't think the slip road should be closed for so long."
