‘MenuPick’ uses modern iPad technology, which is populated with the menu cycle and the bed configurations for each ward, to record each patient’s choice of meal.

Lesley Robertson, assistant head of hotel services, said: “We are delighted to be the first hospital in Scotland to introduce this new meal ordering system.

“The aim of the new system is to use modern technology and innovation to make meal times more enjoyable, interactive and improve patient experience.”

On admission, each patient is issued with a personal copy of NHS Lanarkshire’s menu to review the choices for the week ahead.

Their choices are then transmitted electronically back to the catering department in real-time using a combination of WiFi and 3G technology.

At point of service, each patient has an individual menu card placed on their meal tray, detailing the choices they have selected, to ensure that the correct menu items are presented.

Lesley added: “We have also invested in new regeneration trolleys for the entire Monklands site. This has resulted in greater energy efficiency and improved quality of food due to the split oven technology. The feedback we have received from patients about our new innovations has been very positive.”
