News and Chronicle reporter gets in trim for 10k run

Preparation for the Cumbernauld 10k is well under way for this year’s event – and once again the News and Chronicle is entering the race.

As the latest addition to the reporting team I have bravely volunteered to represent your local paper in this year’s run.

However, for all my bold enthusiasm, I am well behind schedule as my 10-week training plan has been delayed by touring Scotland with my band, going to T in the Park, more touring, a new-found addiction to chocolate chip cookies and a two-week venture around central Europe, starting today (Wednesday).

However, if you, like me, are a little behind schedule but would still like to take part in the event, then fear not as there is still plenty of time to get involved.

There are seven weeks left until the big run on Sunday, September 11 at Broadwood Stadium.

By signing up now you can still receive all the benefits and discounts, including improved health, reduced entry fee, the opportunity to help raise funds for local charities and expert advice on health and fitness from North Lanarkshire Leisure.

If you register before Monday, August 1 you will be able to grab a great discount on your entry fee to the run.

To do so, simply go to www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk or www.q-busters.co.uk, or call 01236 437756. The deadline for entries is Thursday, September 1.

NLL is also offering beginners and experienced runners alike some excellent advice and coaching at sports centres throughout Cumbernauld and beyond.

Check out the jogging classes starting on July 25 at Cumbernauld High School run by North Lanarkshire Leisure, in partnership with jogscotland.

This year there will also be races for younger runners including a 3K run for S1-S4 pupils and a 1K run for primary six and seven pupils.

The two official charities for this year’s event also have local ties as the Scottish Spina Bifida Association and the Craighalbert Centre are two prominent Cumbernauld organisations.

An information roadshow will also be held tonight (Wednesday, July 20) between 6.30pm and 8pm at Broadwood Leisure Centre.
