Nitezone trial for Shawlands

A city centre safety scheme is extending south for more than just the festive season.

From September 4, Community Safety Glasgow will run its Nitezone service in Shawlands, operating on a one-year trial at the Langside Hall rank.

The initiative includes a taxi rank manned by marshals and enhanced police patrols.

Phil Walker, managing director for Community Safety Glasgow said: “Nitezones have proven extremely effective in assisting revellers to get home safely.I am sure that nightlife in Shawlands will benefit greatly.”

Chief inspector Carol McGuire, area commander for Glasgow South East, agreed: “The initiative has been a factor in reducing violent crime, disorder and antisocial behaviour.”

The Nitezone service costs £15,500 a year to operate, and the southside service will benefit from a £5,200 donation from Michele Pagliocca, owner of The Shed. He said: “During the festive Nitezone period, there is a significant improvement. The presence of taxi marshals and the police ensures a quicker dispersal of people, reduces litter and makes the town a more attractive place to go.”
