North Lanarkshire Council adds electric cars to fleet

NORTH Lanarkshire Council just got a little bit greener – by introducing 12 new electric vehicles to its pool car scheme.

The new Mitsubishi i-MiEVs are clean to run and have zero exhaust emissions, both of which will contribute to the council’s aim of finding environmentally-friendly ways to work.

“We are committed to working sustainably,” said Councillor Helen McKenna, convener of the environmental services committee.

“We have a carbon management plan, we’ve been signatory to Scotland’s Climate Change Declaration since 2007, our recycling rate is one of the best in Scotland and now we’re investing in environmentally-friendly vehicles.”

She added: “These cars will help us reduce emissions – and they’ll also demonstrate to others that there really are workable alternatives to petrol vehicles out there.”

Kenneth Wilson, head of land services at North Lanarkshire Council , said: “We expect to save more than £150,000 in the next 18 months through the pool car scheme as a whole.

“It will allow employees to get to and from other offices quickly and easily.”

He added: “The electric cars cost significantly less to run than petrol or diesel vehicles, and they are a far better option for air quality and the environment..”
