North Lanarkshire school band are world champs

North Lanarkshire Schools Pipe Band were crowned the winners at this year's World Pipe Band championships in Glasgow Green.

They took top spot in the overall Novice A section beating off stiff completion from ten other bands, and also came first in the drum corps section.

Meanwhile, the North Lanarkshire Development Band finished a highly commendable 5th place out of 20 bands from across the globe in the Novice B section.

And, just like their peers in the A section, they won the drum corps section.

Jim Park, Head of Music Instruction with North Lanarkshire Council, said: “This is an incredible result for everyone involved; it was a really special night for the pupils and for their parents who were extremely proud of what their sons and daughters had achieved.”

Over 35,000 people are estimated to have attended this year’s championships, which are now in their 30th year.

Councillor Frank McNally, Convener of Education, added: “This is an unbelievable achievement by our young people and a fantastic reflection of the hard work carried out by our pupils, parents, tutors and teachers in our schools each week. I’d like to congratulate everyone concerned on this outstanding success.”

Councillor Jim Logue, Leader of North Lanarkshire Council, added: “I’m proud to say our pupils are the best in the world and that’s official! I’m very proud of their achievements and their commitment in pursuit of the ultimate prize.”

Over 230 Pipe Bands brought around 8000 pipers and drummers to Glasgow Green to compete at the World Pipe Band Championships.

In total 15 nations were represented at ‘The Worlds’ as they are affectionately known including bands from Northern Ireland, Republic of Ireland, Canada, England, USA, New Zealand, Australia, Denmark, Switzerland, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Belgium, the Netherlands and Scotland.
