1997

Savage budget cuts could be set to plunge North Lanarkshire Council into deep financial crisis. Council tax rises and more service cuts were expected when the council was due to reveal its 97/98 budget in the coming weeks. Big spending departments such as leisure, social work and education were all bracing themselves as the council struggled to stay within the capping limit set by central government.

1987

PEOPLE in Cumbernauld were being given the chance to make their voice heard and protest against the transportation of nuclear weapons through the New Town. News of the convoy was revealed weeks before.

1977

Workers at a Cumbernauld factory went on strike this week after negotiations over pay finally collapsed without resolution. “Office girls” joined the picket line set up outside the giant Borroughs computer factory after a last-ditch attempt at a settlement by the management fell through. The 180 workers were members of APEX, the ‘white-collar union’, and went on strike over a disagreement on the interpretation of the government’s wage restraint policy. The workers said they were due £2 a week more under the pay code.

1972

A new supermarket opened in Cumbernauld this week as R. and J. Templeton’s giant store set up shop in Phase Two of the Town Centre. The supermarket opened its doors without any prior announcement and minimum fuss and was expected to boost business in the town.
