1902

A MEDICINARY tipple popular at New Year was continuing to sell well at J. Shennan, the chemist. The raspberry and ginger wine included a mysterious substance called Shennan’s Essence. Each bottle made a gallon of the stuff and there would be a payment for every empty bottle of the stuff returned.

1939

TENANT farmers in Croy’s Gartshore Estate were granted rent rebates because of the poor season. Very heavy rainfall was blamed.

NEWS came from the city of Brotherly Love about a Kilsythian who had made a new life for himself in America. James Gail whose mother still lived in Donaldson Avenue was featured in a Philadelphia newspaper in a column which explored the origin of surnames. The article explained that the earliest record of the name Rankin in America dated back to 1773 – and that its owner Henry Rankin was also from Kilsyth!

1995

KILSYTH woman Valerie Nazir-Ali saw her husband Michael installed as the 106th Bishop of Rochester. Mum-of-two Mrs Nazir-Ali was happily installed in Surrey where her parents Jim and Barbara Cree now lived across the road!
