Council’s a top recycler

Figures show the area achieved a near-44 per cent rate last year.

That’s four per cent above what the Scottish Government sought and is well on the way to the 2013 target of 50 per cent.

Councillor Helen McKenna, environmental services convener, said: “The people of North Lanarkshire have made our recycling initiative the success story it is. They want to recycle – we want to make it as easy as possible.”

Now the authority is looking to expand its recycling facilities. This is likely to include rolling out facilities for glass and food waste and £1.4 million has been earmarked for necessary measures

Recent investment has seen a new centre open at Deerdykes Place in Westfield, Cumbernauld, as well as one at Airdrie and a refurbishment at Bellshill.

Kenneth Wilson, head of the council’s land services, said: “We hope to bring a proposal in the near future that will outline our plans for recycling food and glass waste.”
