Support centre gets spruce-up

Representatives from ASDA spent the day on Thursday at Scotland’s only Spina Bifida family support centre to give the whole building and the gardens some much needed maintenance work.

The work is the first event in ASDA’s newly launched Community Life Champion Campaign.

Lynn Deaken, the Community Life Champion based at the ASDA store in Cumbernauld, said: “We took a team of our technicians and our contractors from city facilities to complete a programme of external work on the charity’s family support centre.

“We are trying to expand our work with local charities so we can make a real difference to the people and communities in our area.”

Clare Cogan Turner, acting head of fund-raising for SSBA, highlighted the importance of the centre.

She said: “We are the only organisation in Scotland who support children, young adults and families who have been diagnosed with Spina Bifida.

“It can be a real struggle to keep the centre running as we rely heavily on private donations and receive less than one per cent of our funding from the Scottish government. Cutting grass and maintenance work cannot, unfortunately, be a priority for us.

“It has been fantastic to get the support of ASDA and the local community to repair bits and pieces and generally to make the centre a nicer place to visit and work in. I would especially like to thank all the people from ASDA and City Facilities who gave up their own time to make a real difference at our centre.”
