IT IS the end of an era for a youth organisation in Cumbernauld after its longest serving officer stepped down last week.

Generations of readers will need no introduction to Lucy Miller who has spent SEVEN DECADES of her life with the Girl’s Brigade – dating back to the days where it was known as the Girl’s Guildry.

Mrs Miller (76) joined the organisation in St George’s Church in her native Maryhill and her involvement never stopped. She moved through the ranks and was commissioned as an officer back in 1953.

After moving to Cumbernauld she joined the 1st Cumbernauld Company in Kildrum Parish Church – and has even seen her original members bring their own grandchildren to the brigade!

Highlights include helping countless girls to achieve their Duke of Edinburgh Award, guiding them through displays and competitions, raising a small fortune for charity and receiving the MBE from the Queen

Mrs Miller said: “It is a wrench but I’m just at the other end of a ‘phone if they need me.’’

And Lieutenant June Shirlaw also opted to stand down last week after chalking up an impressive 36 years as an officer.
