Parents in abseil challenge

Chris and Karen Craig will scale the 50-metre high building on Sunday, March29 and their son, Matthew, will be watching from the safety of the ground below.

Matthew (14) said: “I am really surprised that mum and dad have both agreed to do this.

“Neither of them have done anything like this before and both of them aren’t great with heights.

“It just shows how much it means to them when they are going to try and overcome their fears.”

Matthew was treated at the Teenage Cancer Trust Yorkhill unit after being diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer on Christmas Eve 2013.

Mum Karen said: “The Teenage Cancer Trust unit was a God send, helping to make things more bearable under such difficult circumstances.

“Having benefited from the use of the facilities, we want to do what we can to ensure that other families continue to benefit from the support of Teenage Cancer Trust.”

The fundraising event has been organised to mark the end of the charity’s ties to Yorkhill as it will move to a new unit at the Southern General Hospital this summer.

Vanessa Todd, regional fundraiser for West of Scotland at Teenage Cancer Trust said: “We want to celebrate the work of our unit at Yorkhill before it closes and we’re encouraging the local community to get involved.

“We still have spaces left for the abseil which will raise money for Teenage Cancer Trust.”

She added that the charity relies on the work of people like the Craigs, as their friends and family have raised over £25,000 so far.

Teenage Cancer Trust is the only UK charity to work specifically with young people aged 13 - 24 and build specialist units in NHS hospitals.
