Parliamentary call for council to keep Clyde at Broadwood

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth MSP Jamie Hepburn made the move this week, urging North Lanarkshire Council to pull out the stops to keep Clyde in Cumbernauld.

The motion came after it emerged last week that Clyde had identified the Showpark Football Ground in East Kilbride as a possible alternative to their current home.

North Lanarkshire Council own the Broadwood Stadium and its facilities so Clyde are unable to make any profit from the ground and are having to look at other options.

Mr Hepburn said:”I have lodged a motion asking North Lanarkshire Council to do more to keep Clyde staying and playing at Broadwood.

“This is very important as Clyde FC is our one and only senior league playing team and is one of the main attractions to the Cumbernauld area.

“The club is very family orientated and has given young players a chance throughout Cumbernauld and Scotland.”

The local MSP added that he had been told by the club’s chairman that the Irn Bru Division Three side would prefer to use their own facilities within Cumbernauld.

He added: “Clyde Football Club has been at Broadwood for 17 years now.

“It would be such a loss to the community if Clyde were to move due to financial circumstances.

“I realise that the club have to put their own future first and by securing their own ground would be beneficial for the club and its ability to generate income.”

“The club has brought some memorable moments for the people of Cumbernauld, such as visits from Manchester United and the extraordinary win over Celtic in the Scottish Cup, and a move away from the town would be very regrettable.”
