Pet rescue for rodents

They have small bodies but big personalities - and they badly need loving new homes.

The Scottish SPCA is seeking good owners for dozens of loveable rodents in their care.

Staff at the charity’s Lanarkshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre are currently looking after 31 rats, 10 mice, seven hamsters and two guinea pigs.

Anyone interested in finding out more can visit the charity’s centre in Bothwell Road, Hamilton.

Centre manager Peter Fleming said: “Unfortunately many small pets arrive in our care after their owners become bored with them, which is a real shame.

“Ideally, we’d like our rats and mice to be rehomed in pairs or same-sex groups as they are sociable creatures who enjoy the company of their own kind. “

But the centre also has Syrian hamsters which prefer their own company and make great individual pets.

“Rats and mice are really intelligent animals who can make fantastic pets for younger children, provided adults in the household are committed to their care.”

He added: “taking on any animal is a big responsibility and even rodents require time and commitment.

Anyone able to offer a small pet a loving home can contact the rescue and rehoming centre direct on 03000 999999, or pay a visit to the SPCA base in Bothwell Road, Hamilton between 10pm and 4pm, Monday to Sunday.

The SPCA works to find good homes for all sorts of animals. Dogs and cats are obviously in the majority at the centre, but rodents and rabbits feature regularly there too - and just because mice, guinea pigs or hamsters are small doesn’t mean they aren’t treated as important
