A SOD cutting ceremony was held in Cumbernauld Village on Monday in preparation for the opening of a new playpark.
This marks the successful culmination of a community fundraising project by the Jubilee Park Play Park Group, which raised more than £60,000 in grants and secured an agreement from North Lanarkshire Council to provide long-term maintenance of the park, which is planned to open in time for the school summer holidays.
Julie Flynn, chairwoman of the community group, said: “I and my friend Paula Carty started this five years ago. I grew up in the Village and played in the park when I was a child, but over the years I have seen it decline as play equipment was removed without being replaced. So I’m over the moon to see this park underway, especially as my own children are still young enough to benefit from it.”
