Plight of tumour dog breaks readers' hearts

READERS - and animal welfare inspectors - have taken the abandoned dog featured in last week's Cumbernauld edition front page to their hearts.

The Jack Russell terrier cross was discovered wandering in Carrickstone in a heavily emaciated state with one of the largest tumours horrified inspectors have ever seen.

Staff at the Scottish SPCA 's Lanarkshire Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Hamilton, where she is being cared for, have named her Lilly and say things are looking a little more positive, although she remains in a very serious condition.

Vets are planning to operate today (Wednesday) to remove the growth.

The reaction of one distressed reader was typical of those who wrote in or called. "I hope this unfortunate animal makes a full recovery, and those responsible are caught and dealt with appropriately," the resident said in a letter.

Scottish SPCA inspector, Nicola Stewart, said: "We received a number of calls from members of the public providing information in relation to the elderly Jack Russell Terrier. We are now in the process of following up these enquiries and our investigation is ongoing at present."

Anyone who can help inspectors track down Lilly's callous former owners is urged to call thei Animal Helpline on 03000 999 999.
