Council tax blunder sees account holders facing bank charges in tough times

North Lanarkshire Council has had to issue an apology and mount a review after council tax payers were left out of pocket following an administrative error.

The council admitted that the mistake saw cash for April’s council tax taken out of accounts two days earlier than it should have been.

And that has landed many of those affected with bank charges at what is a uniquely tough time for many households who are already struggling to contend with lost wages or pay cuts.

Among those to express dismay at the blunder was Councillor Alan Masterton.

He said: “I was made aware by a number of constituents that NLC took the April council tax payments several days early - and before many people had been paid.

“This would clearly be unfortunate at the best of times but especially so given that due to the coronavirus situation many people have already experienced a reduction in their income.

“I have been told by the council that this incident was due to human error and that it should not happen again,” he said.

“I have also been informed that a full review of the incident is taking place and that anyone who has incurred bank charges as a result of this incident will be refunded.”

A NLC spokesman confirmed that this was the case and added: “We apologise for this error.

“If anyone affected incurred bank charges these will be reimbursed by the council.

“Those affected should email [email protected] or call 01698 403210 and select option 2.”

When the council was asked when the refunds would be processed the spokesman replied: “As soon as we can.”
