Councillors join forces for Armistice challenge

South Lanarkshire's local councillors have agreed their own peace deal to put aside political differences and accept a special fundraising challenge to mark the 100th anniversary of the ending of the First World War.

In a cross party act of remembrance the councillors have signed up as a group to take part in the Poppy Scotland 1918 Poppy Pledge.

The Pledge challenges groups and individuals to raise £1918 for Poppy Scotland and South Lanarkshire’s elected members aim to do so by pedalling 1918 miles.

The Council’s Veteran’s Spokesperson Councillor Mark Horsham said: “The 100th Anniversary of the end of one of the most brutal and bloody conflicts in human history should be a time for reflection on the values that we hold common.

“I am delighted that the councillors have come together and there is enthusiastic cross party support for this challenge which aims to raise £1918 for Poppy Scotland.”

To fit the challenge around their council duties the elected members will use an exercise bike on loan from Origin Fitness Limited and set up at South Lanarkshire Council Headquarters in Hamilton.
