Gardening service to come to an end within weeks- and here is where it will stop

Residents are being advised that,from October, North Lanarkshire Council will no longer maintain grassed and landscaped areas that it does not own.

A decision was taken by the council as part of its budget setting process in 2020/21 to stop cutting grass and maintenance in locations outwith its actual estate.

As a result, after the final grass cut of the season in early October 2020, it will be the responsibility of the landowners to maintain these areas.

Councillor Michael McPake, Convener of the Environment and Transportation Committee admitted the he knew the move might be an unpopular one but the council had no option.

He said: “With significant reductions in government funding, we have been forced to make difficult decisions to achieve the necessary savings to balance our budget, We understand that the decision to stop maintaining some areas of land will impact on residents, and they may be unhappy.

“However, we are simply unable to continue to provide this service.

“We have published information for residents, setting out how they find out who owns any areas of land near their home and options for future maintenance.

“I can assure residents that this decision was not taken lightly. Savings made will be reinvested in maintaining vital local services.”
