Labour’s 2010 majority of almost 14,000 disappeared in a crushing 36 per cent swing to the SNP as voter turnout also increased from 64 per cent to just under 74 per cent.

Mr McDonald (38), lives in Milton of Campsie and is a former solicitor.

The confirmed figures were:

Cumbernauld, Kilsyth and Kirkintilloch East

John William Duncan, Scottish Liberal Democrats - 1,099

Stuart Campbell McDonald, Scottish National Party (SNP) - 29,572
