Pride campaign hits milestone

SUPERCOUNTY, Lanarkshire’s Civic Pride Campaign, has celebrated its milestone 100th board meeting.

The board of Supercounty consists of a Lanarkshire wide partnership with North Lanarkshire Council, South Lanarkshire Council, NHS Lanarkshire, Scottish Enterprise, Strathclyde Police along with representation from the private sector and the community itself.

Ian Livingstone, chairman since the inception of the Campaign in 1992, said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the board of Supercounty. The Campaign started with five dedicated and enterprising people – Terry Currie, director of Scottish Enterprise (formally Lanarkshire Development Agency); Ronnie Smith, chief executive of Lanarkshire Enterprise Services; Tommy Brennan, Ravenscraig union convener; local entrepreneur Donald Storrie and myself.

“The Campaign was created to combat the feeling of negativity throughout Lanarkshire after the demise of the heavy steel industry.

“Over the years, we have supported many communities and grassroots projects as well as hosting numerous school based events including our flagship Lanarkshire Supershow and Choir Festival.

“The Campaign was also instrumental in the creation of the Lanarkshire Business Awards.

“More recently, Supercounty achieved the success of attracting the prestigious International Children’s Games to Lanarkshire in 2011, and is now working towards Celebrating Lanarkshire 2013 – a new venture which we hope to share with our Lanarkshire communities later this year.”

Mr Livingstone added: “I am very proud, as chairman, to be involved with such a uniquely placed project that is Supercounty.

“Board membership may have changed over the years but the passion for partnership working has not wavered.

“I wish to thank all board members, past and present, for their continued support and faith in which I believe we have in Supercounty.”
