Promise of a home for 500 families

FIVE hundred new houses will be built in North Lanarkshire over the next few years, it was announced this week.

The council announced it is to plough a further 30 million into its housing budget.

The funds will be distributed throughout the local authority area and officials say this latest investment means that NLC will spend 58 million on housing this year alone.

Barry McCulloch, convener of housing and social work services, thinks the advances facilitated by the additional funding will be apparent in the near future.

He said: "We have doubled the number of new-build properties we had originally planned. This is mainly due to lower interest rates, longer payment terms and lower costs.

"This budget allows us to sustain major levels of investment in our existing properties as well as supporting ambitious plans for our new build programme."
