Provost’s invitation to help Malawi

The fundraiser will be held in Motherwell Concert Hall on Friday, May 30, and is hoped to raise over £20,000 to help people in the Third World country.

Provost Jim Robertson, visited Malawi in 2013. One person he met was disabled 10-year-old Bridget Maulana whose mother carried her miles to school each day and waited all day to carry her home. The donation of a bike and trailer not only helps Brdiget’s mother take her to school but also allows her to travel around selling vegetables she grows herself.

Provost Robertson said: “It doesn’t take a lot of money to help a family in Malawi receive essential medical treatment, access to education for their children and to create opportunities for them to earn money to make sure they have food, clothing and shelter.

“I have set up the Provost’s Malawi Project to raise money to set these families on the way to a better life and to help them to help themselves.

“The people are willing to work hard; walk long distances to take their children to school and often just a small amount of money can help set families on the way to a better life.

“With the help of Deputy Provost Jean Jones, colleagues and friends, I am hoping to raise as much money as possible to help disabled people and their families in Malawi.”
