Pupils campaigning to save Abronhill High meet with politician

PUPILS fighting against North Lanarkshire Council plans to merge two Cumbernauld schools have met with a leading politician.

The group of Abronhill High pupils had a meeting with SNP MSP for Cumbernauld and Kilsyth Jamie Hepburn yesterday (Monday) to discuss the proposals to merge their school with Cumbernauld High.

Mr Hepburn took the opportunity to discuss the process involved, and how to ensure that pupils at Abronhill High can be involved in the efforts to stop North Lanarkshire’s plan to shut their school.

Mr Hepburn said: “It is vitally important that those who will be most affected by the closure of Abronhill High School – that is the school’s pupils - are heard in the coming months, as the council consults on its plan to shut the school next year. That is why I am so pleased that a group of students has emerged to campaign against the closure.

“And of course, I was only too delighted to meet with some of those students to discuss how we can work together in the coming months to try and halt this proposal in its tracks.

“Now that the council’s consultation on the proposal to close Abronhill High is open, I hope to see a huge response from the Abronhill community and beyond to tell them why the school must stay open.”
