Question time a big success

A WELL attended question time event was held last week at Greenfaulds High School.

Members of staff at the school were joined by pupils and parents to grill a panel over a range of carefully selected questions designed to reflect some of the main concerns of Scottish Society in the present day.

The panel members included Central Scotland List MSP Mark Griffin (Labour), Councillor Willie Goldie (SNP), the governor of Barlinnie Derek McGill, former EIS president Helen Connor, a member of the Youth Parliament and News and Chronicle Reporter Martin Dalziel.

The panel was chaired by Modern Studies teacher David Johnston MBE.

MSP Mark Griffin said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the evening and congratulate Greenfaulds High for organising it.

“The turnout was great and local people had the opportunity to listen to the views of panel members and scrutinise the answers given.

“It was an excellent event and I hope the school will consider making it an annual occurrence.”

The questions up for discussion tackled issues including the referendum on scottish independence, mandatory sentences for people caught carrying a knife and the right to strike over the right to an education.

Several of the topics provoked heated discussions amongst the audience with both politicians coming in for criticism for following party lines and not arguing independently, and the debate over teacher’s pay and strikes broadening onto the impact of government cuts on all walks of life, not just those in the public sector.

On the evening David Johnston said: “This was a great event and I’m really pleased at the response.

“It’s important to tackle issues such as this and it was good to see interaction from the audience.

“I think the panel worked really well and we had different views which encouraged broad debate.

“Hopefully this is something that we will be able to do again on a more regular basis as I think it was a great success.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took part in the event.”
