Rescued kittens are feline fine

WORKERS at a waste management plant saved a litter of abandoned kittens that had crawled into recycling machinery.

Staff at Dow Waste Management Centre, in Cumbernauld, arrived at work to find the eight tiny kittens asleep in the engine of a machine.

The kittens were only about three weeks old would most likely have been crushed had workers not found them in time.

Manager Kelly Collins said: "The kittens were probably in the engine because of the heat.

"We put them in a box with a toy and something to comfort them and placed them by the radiator.

"The company director, Sheila Dow, went out to Boots to buy syringes so we could feed them milk. They were so tiny, they could fit in the palm of my hand."

Staff at the centre think the kittens were most likely abandoned by their mother, rather than dumped by an owner.

Kelly added: "It's likely the mother may have had them in the yard then ran off.

It's not the first time we've found kittens, but it's the largest litter we've found. It was great that they were all alive."

News of the discovery spread around the yard, and seven of the litter were adopted by staff.

But one tortoiseshell kitten is still to be homed and is currently being cared for at the Cat Protection's Glasgow Adoption Centre in Kirkintilloch, where staff have named her Dervy Doll after receptionist Derville Smith (pictured).

Charlaine Tighe, deputy manager at the centre said: "Dervy Doll is doing great, at first she was really missing her mum and was crying the whole night.

"Once she's nine weeks old we're hoping someone will come forward and take her on. She's very sweet natured."
