Residents to have their say on the Wall

The Wall, which in 2008 was designated part of the Frontiers of the Roman Empire world heritage site along with Hadrian’s Wall and the German Limes, is jointly cared for by Historic Scotland and the Scottish councils which the old Roman fortification passes through.

Now a series of workshops will offer the chance for people to give their views on the site and suggest any action they would like to see taken.

Site co-ordinator Patricia Weeks of Historic Scotland said: “The physical scale of the Antonine Wall, which runs across the whole of central Scotland, means that many groups and individuals may wish to be involved in the preparation of this management plan.

“We held a series of key stakeholder workshops recently and would now like to consult more widely on a series of proposed issues, aims and objectives. The purpose of the public workshops is to gather views of local residents, community councils and special interests groups, and to find out what actions might benefit them the most over the next five years.

“To make it as easy as possible for people to take part, we are holding one session in each of the local authority areas along the length of the Antonine Wall, and anyone who is interested can sign up to the one that is most convenient for them. The only caveat is that places are limited by venue capacity and so must be booked 48 hours in advance.

“Refreshments will be served at all sessions and we hope to see many local residents and users of the World Heritage Site come along to share their hopes and ideas for the Antonine Wall.”
