Retirement bash for Cumbernauld political veteran

A GALA dinner is being planned for the former provost whose name is synonymous with public service in Cumbernauld over the last four decades – in what could be the town’s biggest retirement ‘do’ this year.

Councillor Gordon Murray, pictured below, will be honoured at the event in New Town Hall on Friday May 11.

At that point, the Scottish Nationalist-turned-independent will be enjoying his first week of ‘freedom’ after 43 years as a councillor.

Councillor Murray, an engineer by trade, arrived in Cumbernauld from his native Aberdeen in the 1960s to work at the Cumbernauld Development Corporation. He quickly earned a reputation as a firebrand when he succeeded in becoming a councillor.

Former CDC landscape boss Bobby Johnstone said that he discussed the matter with the councillor - and that he ultimately agreed to the dinner.

Mr Johnstone said “We want to make it clear that this is to mark the occasion of Gordon’s retirement.

“It’s NOT a political event and we would welcome ALL former friends who worked with him at CDC and Cumbernauld and Kilsyth District Council.’’

The event is set to start at 7pm for 7.30pm. Tickets are £16 from Mr Johnstone on 738311.
