Road hold-ups spark a wave of anger

TRAVEL chaos caused by the controversial 'Neon Wave' project on Cumbernauld's Central Way has infuriated commuters.

Frustrated town centre workers whose journeys have already been prolonged by the A80 roadworks say work on a new 'Neon Waves' sculpture on the main road into Cumbernauld is causing even more delays.

One commuter, who works in the tax office and asked not to be named, explained how his journey to work has been impacted.

He said: "I come in from Kirkintilloch and the hold-ups have been terrible every single morning.

"It's taking about 20 to 25 minutes to get from the roundabout at Broadwood to the town centre - it should usually be about five minutes tops."

Drivers heading towards the town centre from the Craiglinn Roundabout at Broadwood Stadium are being caught up in queues which start just before the Back O'Hill Roundabout and crawl until the roadworks end.

A busy bus stop is also sited in the middle of a section which is down to one lane, causing a further bottleneck.

The much-derided 963,000 project has been one of the most contentious issues of the year, with rafts of angry residents voicing their discontent.

A council spokesperson said: "We understand that these works are currently causing some frustration to drivers, and we apologise for the delays and inconveniences they are causing.

"The project is due for completion by early October. We'd like to thank road users for their patience thus far, and assure them that we're doing everything we can to complete these works as quickly as possible."
