Roadworks near Cumbernauld crash site ahead of new barriers

PLANNED roadworks along Wilderness Brae, Cumbernauld, began on Monday morning.

The roadworks were scheduled before the horrific three car smash which claimed three lives on August 1.

However, North Lanarkshire Council will now carry out some preparatory work during this period, ahead of new crash barriers being installed on the curved section of Wilderness Brae. The advisory speed limit will be 30mph during the works.

A spokesman for North Lanarkshire Council said: “The resurfacing work planned for Wilderness Brae is now underway and will incorporate a number of additional safety measures.

“It is expected work on installing barriers on the central reservation will begin when the present works are completed.”

Local residentrs were left reeling after the smash. Although investigations are still underway to determine the cause of the accident, it is thought one car crossed the central reservation, colliding with the others.

A vocal local campaign called for safety barriers, and thousands of signatures were collected both online and on written petitions.
