Robert the Bruce design for park

Willie Homer (43) will have a 6ft tall sculpture of his design in Cumbernauld Community Park after his concept won from entries to a competition organised by Friends of Cumbernauld Community Park.

The Friends group has been working with Cumbernauld College to create a series of public art pieces in the park, which has a former Roman road running through it.

Barney Kinsley, chairman of Friends of Cumbernauld Community Park, said: “We hope that the annual competition at the college will convince more and more people that Cumbernauld might be a new town but it has a long history which is reflected in the Community Park along the old Roman/Drovers road.”

The winning sculpture will appear alongside last year’s winner ‘The Total Beast,’ which was designed by Jennifer Cooper.

Willie, said: “I am stunned that my design is to be made into a sculpture for the park - knowing that my work will be seen by future generations is great, and it’s even better that it will be displayed in my hometown.”

Steven Hart, head of art and design at Cumbernauld College, added, “The Friends had a tough job on their hands trying to pick a winner. Willie’s design offers a modern twist on Scottish history and I am delighted that his work is to be commemorated in the park. It is a great achievement for a local artist.”
