Sam Smith, Carluke, creates FoodSense

WITH so much of our food going to waste, a Carluke student has designed a gadget which could reduce our weekly food bills.

Glasgow School of Art student Sam Smith (23) has created FoodSense — a handheld device that he hopes people will use to help them buy and cook in the correct quantities.

The product can also assist with diet management as well as suggesting recipes based on your preferences.

Former Carluke High pupil Sam said: "I discovered that around one third of the food we buy will be thrown away or go out of date.

"FoodSense is handheld and has a scanner on it so, while you are shopping, you can scan the product to see how it could divide into

portion sizes.

"Once a product is getting close to its sell-by date FoodSense sends a message and also suggest recipes."

Sam has also won three awards from the Scottish Institute for Enterprise for Vac U Loc — a novel bike carrier system he designed.
